Boys Soccer: Hornets Wrap Up Impressive Season with Tough Loss to Nacogdoches

By: Sports Reporter |  | February 27, 2021

New Summerfield, TX—The season finale did not disappoint with the Hornets falling in evenly matched affair that was decided by one goal (3-2) to rival Nacogdoches. The season ending loss to Nacogdoches was not a setback as the Hornets overall record was 10-4-2 including 7 wins over schools who compete at various levels of the University Interscholastic League (UIL). Completing the year with a 0.69 %-win record, the team continues the tradition of perseverance and determination that has become characteristic of the team over past several seasons under the leadership of fourth year head coach Jesus Mendoza.

“The effort was there, and the guys limited their opportunities but, at the end of the day we have to give them credit for playing like a high-caliber team” said Mendoza following the match. The Dragons of Nacogdoches will head into the UIL state playoffs while the Hornets end the season because the UIL does not currently offer soccer to small schools (1A and 2A). Despite their impressive record and continuous success against schools who are able to play in the UIL alignment, the Hornets continue to produce winning teams and compete well with schools across the region. “It would be great if we could play in a UIL district but, at the end of the day it’s about building character and giving kids the opportunity to compete” said Mendoza when asked about not being able to advance in the playoff structure.

The Hornets will return most of the roster losing just 3 seniors to graduation this year and the expectation for success on and off the field of competition will likely be the story as they continue to build a solid foundation year after year.
